The Joy of Lent

Published March 10, 2015

(Tripp Ledger – 3/10/2015) The Joy of Lent We are now roughly halfway through the season of Lent – a time of sober reflection as we consider the great suffering and pains that our Lord Jesus Christ endured in order to free us from our sin.  However, it is important not to lose sight of the undercurrent of joy that permeates the Lenten season.  Hebrews 12:2 says of Jesus, “For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”  Jesus, despite having to suffer immensely, […]

Feeding Starving Children

Published February 13, 2015

(Delmont Record – 2/13/2015) Feeding Starving Children [Jesus said,] 51“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world…53Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats […]

Holiday Fools

Published November 25, 2014

(Tripp Ledger – 11/25/2014) Holiday Fools As I sat down to write this there was a Norman Rockwell calendar sitting on the table opened to April.  The painting shown, April Fool 1945, is quite a sight.  A man, wearing skis and fishing a blue lobster out of a tomato can labeled “Plums” with a backwards rod, is surrounded by all sorts of foolishness.  Apparently there are 51 “errors” in the painting.  As I contemplated all this, it brought to mind some of the foolishness we see around us during this time of year. We have just celebrated Thanksgiving, and yet […]

Living a New Life

Published November 14, 2014

Living a New Life Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.  And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live […]

Do the Right Thing

Published September 16, 2014

(Tripp Ledger – 9/16/2014) Do the Right Thing “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”  Galatians 6:9 (New International Version) Here the Apostle Paul points out something that is obvious and yet, at the same time, often overlooked. Doing good is often hard work. Sadly, this is often glossed over in Christian teaching. Often we hear a message of “if you come to Christ, your life will be blessed” – meaning comfortable and easy. But the truth is, doing the right thing is […]
